Alk Brand grew up in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa. Despite his grandfather’s advice to avoid agriculture, Alk pursued a B.Com and honors degree in industrial psychology at Stellenbosch University. His career began at Pioneer Foods, where he rose through various divisions. His initial foray into agriculture came with Massey Ferguson South Africa, where he developed a keen interest in global markets.

After returning to Pioneer Foods, Alk moved to the UK and later transitioned to Richardson International, managing their European operations. In 2012, he joined Westfalia Fruit, leading its global expansion. Under his leadership, Westfalia became a powerhouse in the avocado market, ensuring year-round availability of avocados.

Alk emphasizes the importance of authenticity, passion, and continuous self-improvement in leadership. He believes in servant leadership and credits mentors for his growth. Alk candidly discusses the challenges of balancing work and personal life, especially when living abroad. Despite these challenges, his career provided opportunities to travel, meet diverse people, and impact the agricultural sector.

As a South African abroad, Alk offers a unique perspective on the country’s resilience and potential. He speaks about common challenges faced by developing countries but remains optimistic about South Africa's future through innovation and determination.

Having recently stepped down from Westfalia, Alk seeks new purposeful endeavors. He is passionate about corporate governance and involved with the Institute of Directors.
